Typically, the pet stem cell laboratory in Safari Veterinary Care Centers carries out more than 150 stem cell transplants yearly. This number is set to double within the next year as more people look for solutions outside the box.

At our stem cell laboratory for animals, we have successfully leveraged stem cell transplants to treat lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma cases without any recurrence. As a team-based pet stem cell laboratory, all hands are often on deck to ensure that pets get the quality treatment needed.

Our treatment at Stem Cell Safari comes in two types. One known as Autologous Transplant requires harvesting stem cells from a pet, freezing the stem cells, and returning them to the subject after a heavy dose of chemotherapy has been deployed.

The other type of stem cell treatment is known as the Allogeneic Transplant. It involves the extraction of healthy stem cells from the bone marrow or blood of a relative or unrelated source material matching the subject, which is transplanted into the subject.

Working in the pet stem cell laboratory, harvested cells are processed by a member of our team in a sterile, treated environment. These cells must be stored cryogenically to ensure they remain viable when they are needed for use in treating pets in dicey conditions.

Cold Storage – How It Works

At Stem Cell Safari, we have a team of specialists experienced in working in a stem cell laboratory for animals. This team is in charge of extracting, processing, and preserving stem cells most safely to ensure sustained viability.

We have processes in place to ensure that each step in the process is done correctly. While cell processing requires a fully sterile space where our personnel are dressed in sterile protective gear, the cooling aspect involves combining a special cryo-protectant to the cells. High-quality containers are necessary for storing the stem cell samples safely at low temperature standards.

All collected stem cells are slowly frozen following a process where the temperature is reduced by one degree every one minute. Protective gloves must be worn while handling this process to prevent risks of frostbite on exposed fingers and other parts of the hand. All containers with stem cells in them are moved to cryogenic storage tanks with temperature ranging between -140 degrees and – 196 degrees Celsius to maintain viability.

Typically, a stem cell laboratory of our level can store more than 6000 containers or bags of stem cells in cryogenic tanks which are monitored on a daily basis. We confidently believe this number can be equated to over 6000 pet lives successfully saved as long as the stem cells remain live and in a healthy state.

Our process involves the steps below, explained in brief:

  1. Fatty Tissue Preparation

    Fat tissue is worked on using special enzymes to separate the stem cells from it.

  2. Stem Cell Separation

    This step involves removal of stem cells using a centrifuge through a specific practiced process to avoid any damages.

  3. Fat Separation

    Fat separation is completed using precision filters.

  4. Liquid Nitrogen

    This step involves use of liquid nitrogen to freeze up viable stem cells at a rate of a degree less per minute in a special container.

  5. Biological Safety Cabinet

    This process involves using a safety chamber for keeping processed stem cells free from bacteria during handling.

  6. Cell Incubator

    Used for maintenance of stem cells at a specific temperature on-going to ensure its health and live status.
